Utah Valley University Gunther Trades Building Dock Conversion
CORE Architecture partnered with Utah Valley University to deliver a strategic renovation that expanded instructional space for the College of Engineering Technology. The Gunther Trades Loading Dock Conversion transformed an underutilized exterior covered storage area into much-needed classroom space, addressing the university’s growing need for functional learning environments.
With UVU facing a shortage of instructional space, the design solution maximized the existing building footprint by converting the loading dock into enclosed, conditioned classrooms. This adaptive reuse approach allowed the university to increase capacity without the cost and time associated with new construction. In addition to the classroom expansion, the adjacent shop area was updated to better support hands-on learning and evolving instructional needs.
To accommodate new and existing shop equipment, CORE redesigned the building’s mechanical and electrical systems, ensuring adequate power, ventilation, and flexibility for future upgrades. These system enhancements allow faculty and students to engage with modern tools and technology in a safe and efficient environment.
The result is a functional, future-ready space that supports UVU’s mission to provide high-quality technical education. By converting previously unusable space into a vibrant hub for learning, CORE Architecture helped Utah Valley University expand its capabilities, improve student experience, and meet the growing demands of its engineering and technology programs.
