Wasatch Behavioral Health Recovery Outreach Center
CORE Architecture was hired by Wasatch Mental Health Services Special Service District to design a remodel and addition for their existing Crisis Services and Recovery Outreach Center. The center was being repurposed to become a receiving treatment center for troubled adults and youth, many of whom struggle with addiction and may pose a threat to themselves. CORE took great care to develop programming that carefully considered operational flow requirements to meet the staff’s needs and specified anti-ligature fixtures and finishes appropriate for the healthcare environment.
The 3,460 square-foot remodel of the existing 6,042 square-foot center included transforming two existing group rooms into support offices for the center’s nurse supervisor, police supervisor, and receiving entry. The existing quiet room and adjacent office were converted to a children’s respite room. Open space was repurposed into a day programming room with several recliners; the lobby was updated with a new reception desk and furnishing for the waiting. A laundry and storage room, small consult room, and shower room were added directly adjacent to the day programming room to offer additional amenities to the clients.
The center’s 2,300 square-foot addition contains nine new offices, staff and client restrooms, nurse manager’s office, and client cool down rooms. To minimize disruptions for existing patients, the new receiving area provides a separate entrance for processing new patients. The design ties into the existing mechanical system; a new electrical system was installed to accommodate a new security system and increased electrical demand of the expanded space.
From the exterior the center’s addition is almost imperceptible, as the roof and exterior materials tie into the existing building’s design.
