Utah Valley University Autism Center
CORE Architecture was honored to partner with Utah Valley University to design the Melisa Nellesen Center for Autism, a specialized facility dedicated to advancing autism education, teacher training, and community support. Created as a resource for students, families, and educators, the center is a state-of-the-art environment tailored to the unique needs of individuals with autism.
The design centers on visibility, accessibility, and symbolism. Located prominently on campus, the center is easy to find and welcomes visitors with an open, inviting presence. A defining architectural element—the angled glass façade—represents the pursuit of balance and stability, serving as a powerful metaphor for growth, resilience, and the journey toward understanding.
A generous roof overhang marks the main entrance, symbolizing protection and the supportive role the center plays in the lives of those it serves. The intersection of the building’s key architectural gestures becomes a symbolic space of transformation—where awareness replaces fear and connection replaces isolation.
Inside, the facility includes flexible learning environments, specialized classrooms, and training areas that foster collaboration and hands-on engagement. Every design decision was made to accommodate sensory needs, support focus, and promote inclusive education.
The Melisa Nellesen Center for Autism reflects CORE Architecture’s commitment to inclusive design, educational architecture, and creating spaces that serve a greater purpose. More than a building, it stands as a beacon of advocacy, empowerment, and lasting community impact.
